Brand new partnership with Treedom for Earth Summit

In June, we will be holding a first-of-its-kind climate change event called Earth Summit which offers students aged 14-18 the chance to speak to scientists and experts, take part in hands-on workshops run by leading organisations such as National Grid and the MET Office, and meet like-minded peers from other schools. Find out more HERE.

We are excited to announce a BRAND NEW partnership with Treedom to gift each Earth Summit attendee with the planting of a tree which will be planted and cared for by a smallholder farmer in a Treedom project, and be visible online within the virtual “Earth Summit Forest”.

What exactly does this mean?

Well, one of the most powerful weapons against climate change is trees; but not just for their role in removing CO2 from the air, storing it, and then releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.

They also help:

  • Prevent water runoff
  • Improve biodiversity
  • Improve air quality
  • Improve soil quality/prevent soil erosion and fight desertification

But there are even more benefits depending on who plants the tree and where in the world it is planted. Treedom believes the communities of people living where the trees are planted are the best caretakers, so they deliver education and skills-based training that help farmers grow and maintain their trees for years to come. Since their conception in 2010, Treedom have supported over 175,000 farmers in 17 countries with the planting of over 3 million trees.

Why have we picked Treedom?

There are a number of organisations and charities planting trees around the world, but Treedom is the only one that allows you to follow the exact tree and the story of its project online.

Using geo-tagging technology, Treedom enables you to engage directly with your tree; you can see exactly where the tree is planted, its unique photograph and follow the progress of the project through the Tree Diary. Each tree we purchase will be planted in projects in rural communities, supporting local farmers with the initial costs of planting and maintaining the tree until it is mature enough to provide fruit.

Tree species being planted are native to, or respect the biodiversity of the territory they grow in. Their fruits belong to the community they have grown in, meaning they offer both environmental and social benefits. Not only is Treedom making the planet greener, but they are also making futures brighter.

Trees being planted on behalf of Earth Summit attendees include:

50 Coffee trees in Colombia

50 Sapodilla trees in Guatemala

50 Banana trees in Cameroon

50 Lemon trees in Tanzania

Students and teachers will each have their very own tree which they can name and track the progress of. This is a chance to make your mark in the battle against climate change with the planting of a tree. But not only this, the knowledge and ideas shared at this event may just impact students for the rest of their lives and careers.

We are proud to collaborate with Treedom and to offer this fantastic climate change event for the first time.
