Shanghai
Shanghai is the showcase of 21st Century China and its cosmopolitan atmosphere is far removed from most of the country's other cities. From the Bund, the city's vibrant waterfront district where you are surrounded by classic 1930s colonial architecture, the view across the river is of the towering skyscrapers of new Shanghai.
Sites you will want to visit, in addition to the Bund, include the stunning Shanghai Museum, home to a highly impressive collection of Chinese art; the Yuyuan Gardens, which have been fully restored to their original Ming design; and the pedestrianised Nanjing Road, which is always a hive of activity and is a favourite shopping area for the locals.
Specific educational visits can also be arranged, enabling you to speak to subject experts and involved parties. In Shanghai such visits are available to the Silk Institute, a clothing manfacturing factory, a car plant factory, the Museum of Urban Planning and a school, where you will spend time with Chinese students and attend their English lesson.
