The Royal Institution of Great Britain European Science
Study Experience

For AS/A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics students

The Royal Institution European Science Study Experience highlights some of the most pressing issues facing young scientists today.  Our theme for 2011 is 'The Frontiers of Science'.

In 2011 our speakers will be:

Dr Mini Saaj, Head of Space Robotics Research Group, University of Surrey - Space Robotics: Wider Horizons in Space Exploration
As one of the few female space engineers working in higher education, Mini develops low cost, feasible and innovative technologies for future space exploration missions. She will discuss the many interesting space projects she has worked on and the opportunities in the space industry.

Dr Tim O’Brien, Senior Lecturer at University of Manchester's Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics - Infinity
Tim will discuss how infinity arises in astrophysics: inside black holes, at the moment of the Big Bang and in the geometry of the Universe itself. He will consider whether modern cosmology has a chance of answering this most fundamental of questions, does space go on forever?

Chris Whittleston, studying for PhD at Cambridge on the influenza virus - Flu
Worldwide flu kills 500 thousand people a year and infects around 500 million more. Chris will delve into the nature of flu itself, examine what happens when you are infected and how your body fights back. He will discuss how existing flu vaccines and anti-influenza drugs work and the direction of current research.

Students will attend three seminars hosted by Royal Institution scientists. Each guest scientist will host one seminar, during which they will discuss their area of expertise and explain how their work impacts on our lifestyles of today and tomorrow.

Study Experiences' team of UK curriculum experts work with the Royal Institution and the scientists to ensure that each one delivers their seminar to an appropriately challenging level.
