Tour Highlights

RSC Theatre Performance

The RSC produces over 20 productions a year and since its creation over 50 years ago it has boasted an impressive roll-call of actors including Lawrence Olivier, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Kenneth Brannagh and David Tennant to name just a few. As well as the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, the RSC produces new work from living artists and develops creative links with theatre-makers from around the world.

During your visit to the RSC you can choose to see a play from the current performance schedule at either the Royal Shakespeare Theatre or Swan Theatre. Prior to watching your chosen play, your students will take part in a two hour workshop at the RSC Clore Learning Centre, tailored to meet your groups learning objectives.

RSC Workshop

The bespoke student workshop can provide your students with a first introduction to a play or offer in-depth exploration of particular scenes, themes and characters. Led by RSC Education Associate Practitioners, most of whom are RSC actors or directors, the workshop can be tailored to meet your learning objectives, whether they are to help young people prepare for an exam, work as a group or simply feel more confident prior to seeing the play in performance.

During the workshops, young people explore the play on their feet, working on the language the way that actors do when they are rehearsing a play for performance. The workshop starts with some ice-breaker activities and then moves on to working on key scenes and speeches. Sometimes you'll tell the story of the whole play together. This approach can help young people of all abilities and backgrounds access Shakespeare's language and develop a greater understanding and enjoyment of his plays.

The workshops use active, exploratory, problem-solving methods to help students see Shakespeare as a playwright who can still speak to young people today. The workshop can be run on any Shakespeare play or any play currently being performed by the RSC.

Optional Extra - Visit the Houses

Students can enjoy inspirational and educational visits to any of the five historic houses in and around Stratford-upon-Avon, all directly linked with William Shakespeare; Shakespeare's Birthplace, Mary Arden's Farm, Anne Hathaway's Cottage & Gardens, Hall's Croft, and Harvard House. House visits can be combined with a themed talk.
