History in Normandy

3, 4 & 5 Day Tours from £229 per student
Departing: Throughout 2018 & 2019

From Mont Saint Michel to Giverny, Etretat to Caen, Deauville to Rouen, Eu to Cherbourg, Normandy has a treasure trove of history and heritage for your students to experience and explore. There is a wealth of educational and cultural places to visit and activities for them to take part in.

Normandy is a land created by history, from William the Conqueror to World War II, whose unspoilt coast and countryside have universal appeal. The abundance of cultural and historical places to visit in the region can help support the specific requirements of any school group. The region of Normandy offers a wide range of educational experiences and enrichment opportunities for your students' learning outside of the classroom.

William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, Philip II of France and Joan of Arc were major figures in Medieval Normandy, and being in the environment where the historical events took place can bring what is taught in the classroom to life. The D-Day beaches are evocative locations, often appearing in film and television dramatisations and many are still host to remnants of the battles, such as the Mulberry Harbour and German fortifications. There are memorials and cemeteries for both Allied and German soldiers across Normandy to re-enforce the events in WWII history that your students have studied.

Tour Highlights

Study Experiences can arrange a wide range of educational visits in the Normandy region, such as:

The Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry, a unique document, produced during the 11th century, is a wool embroidery on linen fabric around 70m long and 50cm high. It tells the story, in pictures, of William the Conqueror and the Norman invasion of England in 1066.

Le Mont Saint Michel

Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, Le Mont Saint Michel is a remarkable mediaeval walled city, crowned by its great gothic-style Benedictine abbey, and counts among France’s most stunning sights.

Le Mémorial de Caen Museum

This memorial and the museum is dedicated to 20th century history and houses three permanent exhibitions from the origins of World War II and the D-Day Landings to the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Bread & Cheese-making

At a local bakery your group can actively take part in the bread-making process and gain an understanding of the different stages of production. At a goat farm they will learn about the speciality cheeses of France, be shown how cheese is made and have the opportunity to taste. Either can be explained in French or English.

La Cité de la Mer

Dedicated to human adventure under the sea, the interactive exhibitions at this venue include Le Redoutable, the largest submarine open to the public, “Titanic Back to Cherbourg” a museum experience dedicated to the Titanic and the history of migration, and the seabed in the Abyss Aquarium, one of 17 themed tanks.
